PSA, BGS or CGC: what is grading and when is it worth it?

Updated · 2 min read

Grading means an independent company assesses the condition of your card, gives it a grade from 1 to 10 and seals it in a tamper-proof holder (slab). For expensive cards, that's the standard when selling.

What do PSA, BGS and CGC do?

PSA is the best known and commands the highest prices for a 10. BGS (Beckett) uses subgrades and a "black label" for perfection. CGC is growing fast and is often quicker and cheaper. All three are widely accepted; PSA 10 fetches the most on most markets.

How does the scale work?

A 10 is "gem mint": perfectly centred, clean corners and edges, no scratches. A 9 has one minimal flaw; from 8 downwards you can see it with the naked eye. On sought-after cards, the difference between a 9 and a 10 is often hundreds of euros.

What does it cost?

Expect €15 to €40 per card for the standard service, plus shipping and a waiting time of weeks to months. Many collectors go through a local grading intermediary that bundles submissions.

Which cards should you grade?

Cards that are already worth €30 or more ungraded and look immaculate. Check centring, corners and surface under bright light first. In TCG House you can see, per grade, what comparable slabs recently sold for on eBay.

Frequently asked questions

Does grading always increase the value?

No. A PSA 7 of a €5 card is worth less than the grading fee. Only high grades on sought-after cards turn a profit.

How do I check a certificate number?

Every slab has a number you can look up on the PSA, BGS or CGC website. If it doesn't match, don't buy.

Can I scan a slab?

Yes, TCG House recognises slabs from PSA, BGS, CGC, SGC and ACE and links them to graded prices.
